Mr Joe B. Carvalho (Al Pacino) is a New York City detective who has been working for the city force for over thirty years. There is no such thing as retirement in his world, and he's well aware of the danger that his job presents; but he also knows that he works with some of the best and brightest members of law enforcement and it's a job you can't put down easily. So life goes on: Mr Joe B. Carvalho continues to keep crime off the streets, solving one case after another, until suddenly everything changes when his partner suffers an injury during a high speed chase that requires surgery to save her life. After this incident happens, Mr Joe B. Carvalho is sent to a small town of Sullivan County, NY, where a series of gruesome murders of young girls have occurred over the intervening weeks. The film received a positive response from critics and audiences alike. It was praised for its acting and action, but criticized for some poor writing and direction. The film is made up of three stories that run together. Although each story is separate from the other two, they all share several overlapping characters; for example, the same actors play multiple characters in each story (although they are not always the same ones). In addition, the themes of the stories have a connection with one another. The film begins at a point in time where Mr Joe B. Carvalho has stopped a robbery in progress at a bank, which he has just caught on camera, and is being congratulated on his latest success by Rachel Donnelly (Amy Madigan), his boss. The two have been on several intimate dates, but have not been married yet due to blackmail from his past life as an undercover cop who spent over 30 years undercover. In this same scene the bank robbery suspect is being interrogated by three female detectives who are also interrogating him about what happened to his girlfriend during their previous date (he had not told her about his job). He gives them the information about his girlfriend's disappearance (he is told that she has disappeared off of cell phone records). Rachel congratulates Mr Joe B. Carvalho again, however, she then begins to question him about his past life as an undercover cop and asks him if he ever killed anyone during the 30 years he was undercover. She asks him if he ever had to kill anybody who might cause trouble, or was there anyone who knew too much. He responds by telling her that "it was very hard", but wouldn't elaborate on it. She also asks him if he ever kissed her on the mouth under false pretenses, which he denies doing knowing that she would not accept it. She then asks him if he was ever married or had children, both of which he replies no to. The film then shows several sequences of Mr Joe B. Carvalho's daily life as a police detective, mainly tracking possible criminals and bringing them in for questioning. He also has several random encounters with different people throughout the film which eventually tie into his past life as an undercover cop. One day while tracking down a criminal at a laundromat, Mr Joe B. Carvalho bumps into two teenage girls who become angry at him for almost running them over with his car (he swerves to avoid them causing one of the girls to drop her cell phone). cfa1e77820
